General Mowing Tips

  • Mow little and often
Avoid cutting off too much at once. As a rule of thumb, don't remove more than one-third of the grass height in a single mow. This reduces stress on the lawn and encourages thicker growth.
  • Keep your blades sharp
Dull blades tear grass rather than cutting it cleanly, which can lead to brown tips and disease. Sharpen your blades regularly, or have them checked during a service.
  • Switch up your pattern
Mowing in the same direction every time can lead to compacted soil and uneven wear. Alternate your mowing direction each time to keep things even and help grass grow upright.
  • Don't mow wet grass
Wet grass doesn't cut well and tends to clump and clog your mower deck. It also increases the risk of slipping on slopes. Wait until things dry out where possible.
  • Make use of mulching
If your mower has Honda's Versamow™ system, mulching is a great way to return nutrients to the lawn—especially during dry spells or in spring when growth is fast.

Seasonal Lawn Care Tips

Spring

  • Aerate your lawn to relieve soil compaction and encourage root growth
  • Overseed bare patches to help your lawn fill out and stay dense against weeds
  • Apply a balanced fertiliser rich in nitrogen to fuel lush spring growth
  • Rake thoroughly to remove winter debris and prevent mould buildup
  • Raise your cutting height early in the season while the lawn wakes up
  • Mow more frequently as growth speeds up, especially after rain

Summer

  • Water deeply but infrequently early in the morning to keep roots healthy and reduce evaporation
  • Spot treat weeds quickly to prevent them from spreading
  • Avoid heavy foot traffic on drought-stressed grass to reduce damage
  • Raise your mower deck height during dry spells to shade the soil and conserve moisture
  • Mulch rather than collect to retain moisture in the soil

Autumn

  • Remove fallen leaves or mulch them to prevent disease
  • Apply potassium-rich fertiliser to strengthen roots ahead of the colder months
  • Consider liming if a soil test indicates acidity to improve soil health
  • Keep mowing regularly to prevent leaves from smothering the grass
  • Lower your cutting height gradually for a cleaner finish going into winter
  • One final mow before winter sets in helps avoid fungal issues

Winter

  • Avoid walking on frosty or waterlogged lawns to prevent compaction and damage
  • Plan your soil testing and fertiliser schedule for the coming growing season
  • Mowing may slow down or stop altogether - don't mow if the lawn is frosty or waterlogged
  • Use this time for maintenance on your mower: give it a clean, have it serviced, sharpen blades, and see our battery care tips below if you use cordless gear

Winter Battery Care Tips for Cordless Gear

  • Store it indoors, somewhere dry and cool
Avoid leaving the battery in the garage, shed, or anywhere it can get too cold or damp. A cupboard inside the house is ideal and at a temperature of around 10–20°C is best.
  • Don't store it full charged or flat
Batteries are healthiest when stored at about 40-60% charge. If it's full, run it down slightly before storing. If it's flat, give it a partial charge to avoid deep discharge.
  • Remove the battery from the tool
Always disconnect the battery from the tool when not in use. Leaving it connected can slowly discharge the battery or even damage the tool.
  • Don't store on the charger
Leaving the battery plugged into the charger long-term can reduce its lifespan. Charge it when needed, then unplug and store properly.
  • Avoid moisture and temperature extremes
Don't store batteries near heaters, in direct sunlight, or anywhere damp. Moisture and big temperature swings can damage the cells over time.
  • Check it monthly
Give the battery a visual once-over and a quick top-up charge every 4-6 weeks if you're storing it for a long time. This helps keep it healthy and ready to go in spring.
